Sarah, I am about to use the 9V battery method suggested by few people
one this list and others. I have been told to remove the fish, first to
avoid damage to them.
However, once I was cleaning a 35gal with convicts in it, and received
a jolt. I then noticed a crack in the thermometer. Stray voltage was
leaking into the water column. The fish are still alive and breeding
like nothing happened (jolt occurred about six or eight months ago),
they were a bit stressed at the time, but that's understandable.
Anyway, I'm still going to take out the fish because they are a pair
of apistos which I like a lot and want to breed.

I'll post a message soon to tell my success/failure.
