Java Fern Pruning

I have fast growing Java Ferns (Microsorium pteropus-Windelov) tied to
driftwoods. At the ends of some leaves are bunches of plantlets. Because of
the heavy growth, the parent leaves underneath have died and the bunches
are getting rather unsightly.

What is the preferred manner of pruning Java Fern? Do I just trim off the
plantlets, remove bunches to allow new growth or just shape them by
trimming?

Please advise as I am lost as what to do. Thanks.
