Re: carbonate rich gravel

There are two approaches to increasing CO2 in your aquarium. The first is
the use of an acidic or neutral water with CO2 injection. A carbonate
rich gravel will raise the pH and cause difficulties with this type of
system. The second in the use of an alkaline water with a pH around 8 to
8.5 in which the CO2 is delivered as bicarbonate. In this case a
carbonate rich gravel is highly prized since it will buffer the water at
the desired alkaline pH.
