I agree that substrate heating cables would be very low on the list of
equipment that would aid in the success of growing plants. Certainly I
would not consider spending 400 or $500 to put them in. Unfortunately
you can't decide to put cables in after you setup the tank. If you
are unsure about putting cables in you could install the cables and
decide later if you want to buy the transformer to power them. The
wire for the cables (30g WW) will set you back $2.99 at Radio Shack.
