All glass tank manufacturers I am aware of simply use the plastic trim to
make the tanks easier to build and to prevent the glass edges from getting
chipped during manufacture and shipping.  They do absolutely nothing as
far as the structural integerity of the tank is concerned.  

Rip the thing off, but if you are really concerned call the manufacturer
of your tank and ask them about it's structural properties or lack
thereof.
