The company you are referring to is LSoft and the software is LISTSERV (tm).
The owner is a long-time (20 year) friend of mine.  He is brilliant and
very haughty and opinionated.   But he writes great code.   LISTSERV has
been in use for over 20 years by millions of users.  LSoft also hosts
lists, and there is a free version of LISTSERV for small users.  Definitely
worth checking out, head and shoulders above Majordomo.
