Java ferns turning white?

I've noticed something fairly strage in the past couple of days.
My healthy looking Java ferns are turning from a medium green in the
morning, to an almost greenish white in the evening. I don't think
that's normal. What could be the cause?

The only thing that has changed recently is that I got rid of the
green water bloom I had, so light levels have gone up considerably.
The parts that are turning white are the ones that are most exposed to
the light. Are they maybe trying to use up more of a particular
element than it's present in the tank?

All the other plants are doing well, with the exception of
amazon swords, which are pretty much in stasis. I am not adding any
trace elements yet, so maybe that's part of the problem.

I'd be glad to hear what people think of this.
Cheers.
