For plants and other aquatic organisms, published data clearly show that 
it is the divalent metal cation and not the hydroxide, bicarbonate, or 
chelated complex that is toxic. Since it is almost impossible to 
determine the concentration of the free divalent cation, toxicologists in 
recent years have advocated the use of internal content, rather than 
external concentration, to predict toxicity.
