Magnum filter cleaning

I just bought and used a HOT Magnum as a polish filter. WOW! Water is so
clear! I thought I had clear water before the algae bloom but this is
amazing!

Anyway, the instructions say to clean the filter in a diluted bleach and to
rinse till the chlorine smell is gone. Anyone done this? Is this really safe
for out fish and plants?
