Subject: Nutrient deficienty/toxisity in Hygro. Polysp.

<<I can't seem to figgure this one out on my own. I have had hygro.
polysperma that grew several inches a day in the past. Over the last 6
months, the growth has slowed, and for the most part, stopped. The leaves
have turned reddish, but somewhat translucent, and seem to drop off
easily.>>

Possible causes for slow growth:

1)Your Plants could be infected with a plant virus. Viruses are usually
transmitted by aphids or small insects. Symptoms of viral infection are
usually slow growth, small appearance. Difficult to cure, get some new
healthy plants. Could be also a fungus or bacterial disease. You have to see
a plant pathologist specialized in aquatic plants.

2)Usually plant from the wild (place where they are originally found) have a
good genetic heredity. They have usually good genes that show lots of
resistence against diseases. Plant which are cultivated a long time under
'protected' conditions lose their vigor. They may show genetic degeneration.

3)Here in Vancouver we sometimes get plant from South East Asia. These
plants may show more vigor (disease resistance) than the locally grown
plants.

<<My question is: Could the similar symptoms be caused by an excess of
nutrients? >>

i)To much nutrients could make some elements deficient (the chemical
balance in water is a rather complicated subject).

ii)The pH ( acidity) can also influence the avaibilty of certain nutrient
(some salts are better soluble in lower pH) pH 6-7 is ideal.
