I have also used the kitty litter method and am fairly happy with it.
What I used was the cheapest, pure ground clay I could find, which was at
Wal-Mart. It comes in a red bag and costs about $2 for 25 lbs.  Mine has
been fine for over 8 months and is completely wet throughout.  Roots can
be seen on the underside of the tank and they completely fill the bottom.
