Instead of 3 or 4 18" VHO bulbs, why not use a single 150 or 175 watt metal
halide? I've used both VHO and metal halide and metal halide appears to be
cheaper in the long run because VHO intensity seems to fall off quite
quickly, even with the electronic ballasts. A 175 watt 5500K bulb lasts
roughly a year and can be purchased for around $60. The VHO bulbs will
only last about eight months and cost about $25 to $30 each. The heat
generated by the VHO bulbs isn't appreciably less either. It just feels
cooler because it's distributed over the length of the bulb.
