CO2 injection: Controller or no controller?

For my new setup I am taking a long look at CO2 systems.  I'm looking for a
low maintenance setup, so I'd like to run it off bottled CO2.

Looking at some locally available setups, I see that controllers cost about
as much as everything else put together.   How hard is it to get good
results without a controller?  What issues should I be thinking about as I
decide whether to get a controller?  (Two actually, for two tanks.).
