Subject: aquatic plants as filters 

I am in the sixth grade  and Iam working on a science fair project.  If
you have any information that would assist me please follow-up.
I am trying to show how aquatic plants can filter pollution from run off
water.  I have set up a mock lake filled with cattail and duckweed. I
have been taking water samples to see if the plants have reduced the
nitrate level.  (Container A)We added plant fertalizer to one container
with plants and container B did not have plants but we added fertalizer
to soil.  We want to prove how the aquatic plants will lower the level
of nitrates...any input to expain why and how this works
