You can catch them in most of the freshwater streams round Sydney,
and for that matter, all the way up the coast up to the Qld border. One
popular spot that you can get them is the Yaramundie bridge crossing
over the Napean River near Penrith. I have caught gudgens, bass,
and galaxias/Australian smelt there. 

There are two types of shrimp found there, the smaller one, the glass
shrimp is a filter feeder and has four webbed type claw appendages 
that open up like fans to collect particles of food in the water. I holds 
all four open and empties each one in turn into its mouth in a continual 
pattern catching its food of detritus, algae and small food fragments.
 It grows to an adult size of approx 1 inch. They seem to do well in a
planted tank, but like to place themselves in a flowing current to catch
food. If you have overflows, they will all migrate into them and eat there.
Australian rainbows (that I also keep) find them a good meal if they can
catch them (mainly the smaller ones).

The larger one found is a greenish colour and is more an algae eater,
but will have a go at eggs and fry given half a chance. It also goes around
and cleans up the bottom of the substrate. It seems to keep the insect 
population down too, if you get a problem with aphids etc. Beware though,
if your water quality goes down, they will move out of your tank and look
for a better billabong where the water quality is better, as it assumes that
your tank is drying out. You then end up standing on them in the middle 
of the night with bare feet with a cry of pain or wonder what the smell is 
four days after they go missing.
