It depends on what you mean by "better".

Trickle filters tend to be more expensive.  Trickle filters are easier
to keep clean.  Trickle filters provide a sump to hold stuff like CO2
reactors, heats, etc.  Trickle filters provide better surface skimming
action.  Since the plumbing is generally DIY, trickle filters can
provide better water flow and distribution.  Trickle filters can help
maintain higher oxygen levels at night. 

Biological filtration is good with either one.  Trickle filters are
harder to load with chemical media which SHOULD NOT be used in a
plant tank anyway. 

The choice is up to you.  Either will work fine depending on YOUR
needs, not the needs of the tank or the plants.  There really is no
absolute "better" system.
