Although this isn't exactly aquatic plants, it is biology.  Parasites that
have two or more hosts in their life cycle can do things like that to their
intermediate hosts so that they (the parasites) have better chances of
getting picked up by their definitive hosts. In the case you describe, the
eggs of the parasite are in the bird droppings.  A good recent reference
