Subject: Substrates for my new tank

I am evaluating various substrates for a new 75-gallon planted tank that I
will soon set up. I am planning to have a bottom layer with a
vermiculite/loamy topsoil mix, and an upper layer with coarse sand or fine
gravel. I would also like to add some lava rock boulders on which Java Fern
or moss could be grown. Right now I have identified a local source of lava
rock boulders and coarse sand bags for pool sand filter use. There is also a
place that carries a sandblasting sand called "Black Beauty" (I have not
seen it and I do not know how coarse it is). Has anyone used any of these
materials in planted tanks? Does anyone know if lava rock and the type of
sand sold for pool fluidized filters has any effect on pH? Thanks
