Oxidisation of Plant Nutrients

I once read that one should not use trickle filters with planted aquaria,
the main reason being that carbon dioxide is quickly lost and plant
nutrients are easily oxidised and lost.

However, I can see that a large number of experts are in fact using trikle
filters without any problems. I am reluctant to use these filters for the
above mentioned reason.

Can somebody please elaborate on this?
