Dimming fluorescent lamps

Please note that there are ballasts made especially for dimming. The
electricians and hardware stores I've talked to recommend against hooking
up nondimming ballasts to dimmers. For example, we're not supposed to put
compact fluorescents (which have built-in ballasts) on lighting switches
with a dimmer.

I don't know whether the problem is one of performance or an actual
potential electrical hazard. So be careful.
