One method not involving chemicals to remove excess phosphates
and nitrates would be the algae scrubber device (I forget the name
they called it) which was described in one of the TAG issues last
summer. To summarize: the device circulates water over a shallow
tray which has some carpet mats attached where algae is encouraged
to grow. A small light provides energy for the growth of the algae.
The algae reproduces quite rapidly in this environment and consumes
excess nutrients. The water is recirculated to the aquarium. It
sounded like a novel device although I have not tried it. Anyone
have experience with this gadget?
