The reason vegetation is so far apart in VERY arid climates is
often due to alleochemicals. There is so much competition for a
very scarce resource, water, that plants actively discourage any
other plants from growing within the sphere of influence of their
roots, not even their own offspring are permitted to grow in this
area.
