In the Sep-Dec 1994 issue of The Aquatic Gardener (Vol. 7  No. 5) there
is an article on page 141 titled Peat Moss and Related Topics which
discusses the use of dead leaves as an alternative to peat.

I imagine that using dead leaves might be no less convenient than peat,
but they may make a better substrate which doesn't float around the tank
& get in your filters like peat does.
