Water returns from filters

There has been some discussion about filter water returns recently.
It seems that most folks have the water returns at the surface.

We prefer to have the water returns towards the bottom of the tank.
The slight current there seems to keep detritus from settling and
getting stuck in plant roots and stems. This also helps keep the CO2
looses to a minimum.
