Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 107, Issue 5

I omitted listing my location.  I am located on the gulf coast of in Biloxi, Mississippi.  I posed the question "Growing Aquarium Plants in Hard Water' to get some different opinions.  Excess sunlight and high temperatures are always an issue for this region.  Our summers are extreme and the winters are fairly non-existent.  The warmer temperature is nice for outdoor ponds with the exceptions of controlling excess sunlight and high summer temperatures.

My water hardness (GH) is 300 and the Alkalinity (KH) is also 300.  I have three aquariums in my house, several breeding tanks in my enclosed Patio room and an outdoor pond. I'm considering building another larger outdoor pond next year.  My patio gets a lot of early morning direct sunlight especially during the summers.  One plant I plan to purchase and grow is Valisneria.  Thanks for the input.

To add to what Erik said, I've also found hornwort seems to like a lot of iron in the water. That's just based on my own observations.

I've found myself that I have better luck growing plants in hard water than soft. I've even done experiments where I've let large amounts of water evaporate (75% or so), which effectively hardens the water, and generally I see better plant growth. I don't control all variables on those experiments since they're just informal tests so it's not entirely definitive.

BTW, it's nice to see some traffic on the list. I miss the old days of 20-30+ posts per day.

Since you didn't mention what location on the planet you are at, perhaps
you could tell us what exactly is making your water so hard and what the Kh
and  Gh numbers are.

Have lived (phoenix)where the tap water  was considered "liquid rock"  and
at the other extreme in Milton, MA where the hardness was less than  ONE.
Water filtering thru granite doesn't pick up a lot of elements!   Grew plants
in both places.

Look into the archives for macro and micro nutrients, fertilizing the water
column, and then see if you can get an analysis of the tap water from the
local  water district.

sunlight. oh boy. had a tank that suddenly had a corner that was growing a
plant there like crazy.  got up a little earlier than usual and went down
to my fish room in the basement and lo and behold, a sliver of sunlight was
coming in around the edge of a curtain and was shining right on the corner
of  that tank.  and only for 45 minutes. But that was enough to spur really
hot  growth.

IMHO it is almost impossible to manage the growth generated by the
application of direct sunlight to a tank.  Blows the 2WPG recommendation  out the
window. I have always found it easier to control the tank growth and  health
by eliminating direct sunlight from the equation.

You mention direct sun. This is too much for some plants. I grow several Cryptocoryne species in Tanganyika water. None are found in the lake. Very few will tolerate full sun.
Those that thrive in hard water, but not full sun, and not a full list: C. usteriana, C. hudoroi, C. beckettii, C. wendtii, C. parva, C. x willisii, C. spiralis, C. retrospiralis, C. crispatula var. crispatula, C. affinis, C. pontederifolia, C. moehlmannii.
