Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 99, Issue 2

Hi again Vlad,

I forgot to ask you one more important question. Do you only use 40watts of light? If so, this is probably the problem. I'm not sure how big your tank is, but if you're using flurorescent lighting, you should try to follow the WPG or Watts Per Gallon rule. A low-light tank with plants of low lighting requirement call for at least 1WPG. So in this case you would need 40watts of light over a 40gallon tank. However, since you're growing HC cuba which thrives on more light, you wouldn't be meeting that criteria. You'll want at least 2WPG-3WPG. This is important because the light needs to reach the bottom plants in your aquarium for them to effectively grow.

If you need further clarification email me, jxdean at tribune_com .

If anyone can chime in here it would also be appreciated if I missed something important.
Thanks

Vadiraj,

It is not uncommon for these plants to lose their leaves when they're transferred into new setups with different water parameters. I've heard this called "leaf-melting" before. The leaves rot only to come back stronger and faster. This happens especially with Cryptocoryne plants where you also have to worry about root-rot unless you have a "Wendtii" strain. As for the "hc" cuba. They've done well for me with longer lighting periods. Have you recently adjusted your lighting periods?

Josh

Hi Guys,

I just did a new setup 10 days back. Planted anubias, cuba and cryptocorynes.
Substrate used is ADA amazonia on a ADA power sand special.

Co2 1 pps
Light 40w for 6 hours in the evening and 2 hours in the morning. Total
8 hours a day.
Canister filter, with ADA bio rio in it.

Yet the HC cuba and leaves are getting rottened. I do not understand
what could be the reason?
The tank size is 60x45x45. Must be atleast 150-200 ltr tank.

Please suggest.

Thanks,
Vadiraj

No, its been just 10 days that I setup the tank. Everything is new..
Should I increase the lighting time?

Cheers,
Vadiraj

Probably typical reaction of a water chemistry change?

What was the KH, GH and pH of the water the plants came in?

hello Vadiraj ,

First 40w for 150-200L is not enough. ***
-you should try to double it.
Then , have you tryed to fertilize the tank? with potassium ? *

regards.

That was my guess initially. Instead of investing right away, I plan
to increase the duration of lighting. 12 hours lighting a day.

I did put Do Aqua's be green fertilizer.

Thanks,
Vadiraj
