Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 89, Issue 2

My problem with this one is my fault. I had planted one corner of the tank
heavily with Jungle Val so I had repositioned the bulb to the extreme other
end of the hood and the heat buildup fused the pin hood to the bulb, which
broke when I disconnected it. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I have 2 others of these where I have replaced the ballasts, but I'm really
unhappy with this product overall because, number 1, it seems to me that
the ballast should last longer than the bulb, not always the case, and
number 2, it is a major pain in the butt to replace the ballast, taking the
fixture apart is a real pain. The ballasts don't last very long, or the heat
buildup is clobbering them.

It also really pisses me off to make a major investment and to then have
the manufacturer pull the plug on the model as Coralife has apparently done
with this model. Tetra did that to me as well, discontinuing the cartridges
for the WDF 3000 filter, I had to replace 4 of them. Coralife offers a
double version of this light that supposedly has cooling fans, a good idea
given the heat buildup, but I don't know if I want to invest in one and have
them discontinue that as well.

As far as building traffic, let's see, what color do you fellows suppose
clear water is in a white bucket? ;-)

I had a similar issue a while back with a different manufacturer. I was
able to retrofit my system with AH Supply's parts. I was able to use the same
ballast in my case, but I had to replace the sockets (AH Supply uses a
different pin arrangement than my original system had), but after that I could
use their bulbs. You'll probably end up with a 55W bulb after the
retrofit, unless you can manage to fit a pair of the 36 watt bulbs.

If you end up needing to replace your ballast the AH Supply ballast is
really small and might fit your existing fixture. If it does not I'd suggest
getting a surplus enclosure to house the new ballast, then just run a wire
from the ballast to the strip light. Make sure the wiring you use in the
fixture is rated for 105?C, the more common 90?C wire will become brittle over
time and the insulation will fail. I have used Coleman Cable's Seoprene
line in the past for this as it is black in color and has the temperature
rating that is required in this application.

BTW, it's good to see some activity on the list...

Gerry

Have you tried calling Aquarium Hobbyist Supply to see if you can get a
replacement ballast? That might be all you need.
http://www.ahsupply.com/index.html I have found them to be very helpful. Give a call and ask. I would
take your light apart first to see exactly which ballast you have before
calling though.
