Might be cheaper to keep the tank and get rid of the family!  ;-)

It does seem like something is really out of whack for this much damage to occur so quickly. I suspect the excess food. My guess is someone spilled more than needed in. If your kids are like mine, they would never admit it (but you can see it in their eyes). Not much else could fill the tank with nutrients in your absence. Next time you leave: 1) have them top off the tank daily and 2) only feed the fish once every three days. I personally put the right amounts of food on aluminum foil squares, fold it up and put the date to be used on them/which tank to use them in. I usually set them on the hood of each tank. A phone call reminder doesn't hurt, too. The lace will be fine once you get back to square one (or two).
