Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 65, Issue 14

Thanks for all your comments, folks. The rhodie experiment will begin soon.
Don't worry, no fishes will be harmed in this experiment. First, I want to
see what happens to the water when I just put the wood in it. I'll check the
pH and see what happens to that. Then, snails and plants...see what happens
to that. Then, I'll put a bit of moss (with flagfish eggs attached)...and
then we'll see what happens. My kind of fun. Okay, gang, I promise to let
you know what happens. Don't tell Takashi.<G> Rgrds, MES

Mary,
Most species of rhododendron are toxic. I would not use it in my
aquaria. It is too bad, I had a great looking stump from a rhododendron in
my yard that would have been perfect for my 55 GL otherwise.

Well, if they lose their leaves, they are generally a hardwood. If they are
evergreen, they are softwoods...

I would generally agree with this statement for woods used as construction
materials, but it doesn't apply to all wood. Many deciduous trees are
softwood and many conifers are hardwood.
Broadleaf evergreens (like Rhododendrons) and deciduous conifers also
further complicate things.

Regardless, I would think that Rhododendrons would be unsuitable as they are
generally toxic. The buds are resinous, so I would think the wood would
secrete some oils as well. The best test? Buy some feeder guppes and use a
good amount of rhododendron wood in their tank.

Mary

I used to be a beekeeper years ago. I read in a book called The Hive and the
Honeybee, I think published by Dadant and Son, and in the chapter on various
honey produced from plants they stated Rhododendron honey is poisonous to
humans but will not harm the bees. This book has been used as a textbook for
college courses in Apiculture so it is a well documented authoritative text
book.

I think the idea of testing the wood in a tank with feeder fish is an
excellent idea. Let us know what you come up with.

Hmmm I wonder how the Bee Keepers stop the Bees bringing back Rhododendron
Pollen? Plenty of these plants around.

Some of us may not like testing on animals in that manner. Also it's
probably an illegal act in most of Europe. I know it is in the UK.

It's quite dense, actually. I guess I'll put some in a bucket and see what
brews.
I have a mental picture of upright rhodo branches with Christmas Moss, et
al, as the "leaves" at the top. If the branches are safe, they would be
interesting supports for moss trees. They're gnarled and twisty, and they
don't have much in the way of bark.

Thanks,
Mary

I wonder if Gorse wood (Ulex europaeus) would be OK?

Tonnes of the stuff here is Scotland and it would look very twisted and
interesting as driftwood in a tank.

Far 'Greener' than most imported woods from half way across the planet!

Seemingly you can make Tea out of the flowers.
