I'm pretty sure that they'll be dinner long before they get to eat 
any algae, unless the koi are very, very small.

Koi don't really play well with most algae eaters. They probably 
won't bother plecostomus, but plecos may bother them by rasping at 
their slime coat. Mechanical removal is probably the best route.
