There is a group of lighting enthusiasts at 
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/ who regularly modify lights to 
light up things at distances of 1/3 mile, covering it and the ground in 
between in virtual daylight. A couple million candlepower is not very 
bright once one gets used to some of their monsters.
