And if if virtually explodes when you put it in water, then it's pure sodium ;-)  

Most likely they would be made of lead, where allowed, or zinc.

Stainless steel nuts and bolts can work to weigh down some roots if you really need weights and don't want to add more lead to the environment.

If they were magnesium, they would be very light. Also, just try to burn 
them. If magnesium, they will burn brilliant, blinding white and hot. It 
will even dissociate water to H2 and O2 and use it for fuel. That is why 
magnesium fires need to be extinguished with gas or sand or cast iron chips. 
If they are lead, you should be able to scratch them with your fingernail to 
shiney metal. And if you try them in a flame, they will melt very quickly.
