Re: [APD] Lighting Question

That's a lot of energy to put into an aquarium of that size. With that much life you should certanly be adding ample amounts of CO2, up to 25-30 parts per million, and dosing other nutrients at least twice a week. And be ready to clean up any algae that appears. With that much light, if things take a turn south, they will head down the road pretty darn fast. Even half that much light would be a lot.

Try to maintain phosphate at about 1 ppm and nitrate at ten times the amount. You can find lots of recommendations re dosing if you search the archives. Also dose a trace (micronutrient) solution, like SeaChem Flourish, at 1-2 times the bottle directions.

Subject: [APD] Lighting Question

Hello! I am new to planted aquariums, though I have been running marine/reef
tanks for a couple of years. I have a 49gal freshwater tank, at 3ft deep. I
have not started to plant it yet. For lighting I have a 400 watt metal
halide pendant, that currently has a 10,000K bulb in it that I originally
planned to use on a reef tank. I am worried this is too much light. I think
it being so blue will help, and I can position it higher above the tank. Any
thoughts? Do I just have to be selective on the plants I select? Thanks!
