You not read Tom Barr's fungi article then? :-)

Tannins are beneficial, they provide trace minerals, lower bad bacteria and 
promote infusoria (which the shrimp eat) and the good fungi on the wood 
breaks down the chemicals in the wood for the plants to absorb.

I always use bogwood in all my tanks. Seems to drastically lower disease.
So it's nice to read 'why' it works.

An aquatic animal lives with decaying wood in the wild. Stands to reason if 
the animals have evolved to co-exist with it.

Oriental fish keepers have known about the benefits. They've been adding 
wood and leafs for centuries to their aquatic set-ups.
