If you're putting it under sand, any decomposed leaf litter should
work, not just beech. Paul K. recommends three weeks outside alternating
layers of soil and dry leaves if you're starting with dead dry leaves.

Anything black and very thin and half dissilved is what you're after.

Just for putting in a ram tank though yo could whole brown oak laves,
Indian Almond leaves or even black Alder berries which are identical
in composition to Indian Almond leaves and much much cheaper (ir you
pick them yourself and don't pay a buck a leaf)
