I use the cheapest topsoil that I can find at Home Depot.  It costs about $4
for a 40 (?) pound bag.  It does contain some natural organics, like bark
and peat, but they haven't caused me any problem.

I soak the soil for a week or so, stirring and changing the water several
times.  This reduces the amount of ammonia and helps to remove twigs and
other unwanted material.
