Re: [APD] Healthy bogwood

Some crypt growers swear to Beech leaf litter. I however have used any
leaves from my yard.

There are a couple of methods for this.
True leaf litter is fairly well broken down, think of it as a few steps
away from compost. You can put this down on the bottom and mix with
peat, then cover the whole thing with a clay (kitty litter). I've never
found a root feeding plant that didn't thrive in this.

Another thing many do is to take leaves that are not broken down, make
sure to use something thick like oak leaves. And soak them then put down
a layer of them on top of your substrate. Lots of fish species love
this and will hide in them and root through them.

Not for everyone, but it can work well.

Hi Nick,

What sort of leaves do you use in your leaf litter and where do you
source it? Is it as simple as taking a walk in my local park and
gathering some? I'd be interested in trying this in my Ram tank.

I've used leaf litter in the substrates of tanks many times. Crypt
enthusiasts have know this trick for quite a while.
