Natural rubber and some synthetic latexes yield somewhat readily to petroleum jelly and other petroleum compounds; other "rubber" products not so much. I don't know if the eheim o-rings are neoprene, which has excellent oil *resistance*, or another blend of compounds.

Ehiem used to enclose a little tube of petro jelly with some of their filters. 

It's sort of like, if you never let your light bulb be exposed to temps outside of 40F-80F, it can last longer; but who cares since it will be worthless for other reasons before that matters much.

Vasoline will cause rubber to swell and then dissolve. But aren't the Eheim
seals neoprene (which won't) ?
