The o-rings tend to need replacement from deformation before the petro has a enough chance to due any serious damage. They're usually good for 3-5 years. Longer if you don't change your filter very often. I haven't noticed that those with vas on them tend to need replacement sooner. 

Some rubber compounds are more resistant to the detrimental effects of petroleum jelly than others. O-rings tend to be made with a pretty good resistance to oil.

It should, but I'm happy to hear that you haven't found that to be true.  I
have a leak right now so I figure petroleum jelly can't hurt while I'm
waiting for a replacement.
