Over time, the smaller granules settle down towards the bottom and the larger ones are left at the top, which can mke planting a little trickier but I've never had a problem once a rooting plant takes root. Based on the creedo it's the nutrients and not the gravel, I'd say it's no worse or better than others -- it can hold roots and mulm and looks nice and that's all I expect from a gravel. I know the current fashion is for pre-fertilized substrates, but the fads come and go. Thre's only a few ways for it to go so it will probably come full circle. 

Anybody looking at kitty litter again ;-)
