The swage fitting has ferrule that is compressed onto the tubing when you tighten the nut. For flexible tubing like aquarium tubing you need to use a brass tubing insert that fits inside the aquarium tubing so that it is stiff enough to withstand the swaging without collapsing.

Alternatively, you can use barbed fittings to hold the aquarium tubing and swage the barbed inserts on the valve fitting.

So it's the same way brake lines are attached in cars (flared end and a 
nut basically). I got it.
