Is the traction sand from the beach? Beach sand needs to be very well rinsed. I know in California, beach sand was sometimes used in the cement for concrete footings for homes near the shore built circa 1940s and those footings tend to be awful crumbly now due to the salt in the sand.

Initial rinsing and regular water changes would probably alleviate or at least adequately mitigate the presence of salt.

I thought sand from the beach is no good for Freshwater aquariums. Too much
salinity. And Plymouth is like 1.5 hours away from me. So I went with the
traction sand for $4. Hope it isn't harmful for my tank.
