You probably could have gone to a 1.25 pipe or shcedule 20 pipe and gotten away with it, but it doesn'thurt to have large.

I ran over 800gph on a 1.5 pipe.

The surprising part was that 1" pipe couldn't handle the flow from 
approximately 180 GPH (according to TDH calculations). Let me tell you, 
the 3" coupling in my overflow is *HUGE*. The 3" coupling is the skirt 
between which the water flows and the 1-1/2" pipe sits.
