Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 37, Issue 17

Hi Dennis,

Thats a great idea if I were a little more handy :-) I can pretty much change a light bulb and plug something in... if it requires sawing or soldering or mulching or anything else, I'm not going to buy it ;-)

My philosophy on repair & DIY: If it moves & it shouldnt, you duct tape it. If it doesnt move, and it should, you WD40 it. If those fail, kick it and cuss at it, and if that doesn't work, then pay a professional (or buy a ready-made one) :-)

Its a great idea, I might hold onto the Odyssea POS lights and look into that one of those days. I ended up ordering from hellolights.com http://www.hellolights.com/484xcofraq4x.html and I'm eagerly awaiting my new lights. I can't wait to get rid of these Odysseas, especially since 3/4 of the bulbs are not working. Come on' UPS! Move move move!

The good news is the plants underneath the one working bulb are pearling :-) LOL. My boyfriend said the Odyssea lights are simply simulating a 'perpetual solar eclipse.' LOL

Its good to know I may be able to salvage the bulbs, I thought the unit was burning out the bulbs, but maybe not. I'll have to test that when my new lights arrive... hopefully all my bulbs are still 'alive' and can be recycled into the new Coralife Aqualight I ordered yesterday.

Thanks so much for the great ideas, Dennis!

  Cheers & Gig'Em,
  Steve

My suggestion woudl be to replace the stock ballasts with Fulham
Workhorse ballasts. That is the type AH sells, and BTW, you can't go
wrong with AH supply. If you really want a good light, I would also us
the AH reflectors. You would not need new bulbs unless yours are burned
out, which I highly doubt. Most likely it is faulty ballasts, but who
knows. You can keep the wiring, endcaps, fans, and housing from your
current fixture.

You can order just the ballasts and reflectors from AH.

Your advice is greatly appreciated, I'll be checking out AHS (Aquarium Hobbyist Supply, right?) in just a few moments as soon as this e-mail is sent. Thanks for the validation of my initial hypothesis: these lights are a piece of $H!T (this word, however, has gotten more than its fair dues in modern language) hahaha.
