I grew up drinking out of garden hoses but there have been warnings issues
over the past several years that people should not drink from them.  Check
out hoses at any store and you will find some that specifically say safe for
drinking and others that carry warning labels.

That said, I would be surprised if either fish or plants were to go belly up
from the use of garden hoses.  :)
