Since we're talking about loam, fwiw, Christel Kasselmann is a strong believer in loam underlayments in planted aquaria. Although I cannot confirm that she had in mind what Mr. Dietz describes since I understood her to expectd the loam to be a nutrient source for the plants.

Oh yes. I remember getting up at 6:30 in the morning to go to SC 241 
(soil science) back when I was a forestry major.
