I don't think that pH has any real effects on fish within a reasonable 
range. I think people have been led to believe it does because usually 
changing the pH involves changing the dissolved solids in the water 
which changes the osmotic pressure on the gills. If you can change pH 
without altering osmotic pressure I doubt the fish will care much 
(unless it starts dissolving tissue).
