Fish in the Rio Negro swim in water with lots more tannins than you are likely to put into an aquarium with driftwood. And many of these fish are the ones you have in your aquaria, neon, angels, discus, plecos, festivum, and on and on. Guess how the Rio Negro got it's name:  hint, when appliled to rivers "black water" is not truly black, but a beautiful dark, dark tea or wine color.
 
Some Apistos are at their behavioral best when the water is acidic and rich with tannins

I would not because of the fact that they DO have high levels of tannins
and oils.
