The acid has to loer pH without reducing the carbonate, so jsut any ol' organic acid won't do. But wood not only adds tanins wihen it is feshily introduced to the water, but also adds tothe development of organics including acids as it breaks down over time -- especially if you you have some loracaridae helping it on it's way to decomposition ;-) .

Hmm I wonder if the same is true of my 3 bits of bog wood I've got in my tank?

I've been wondering why my CO2 level seemed low.
