I own a 90G too, the depth isn't an issue for me (I'm 6'1") in terms of
working on the tank, but I have a feeling that extra 4" is contibuting
quite a bit to loss of light.  I've had tons of trouble getting lower
lying plants to grow at all.  Just another thought.
